Pandemonium As Davido Is Sworn-in At Lagos NYSC Camp

Nigerian music star, David Adeleke (Davido), was among 2152 Batch “B”, Stream 2 corps members sworn-in at the Lagos State NYSC Orientation Camp, Ipaja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that security personnel had a hard time controlling fellow corps members and NYSC staff rushing to take a glimpse of the popular musician.

He was later smuggled through the crowd into an office for safety.

In a brief chat with newsmen, the young entertainer expressed gladness to be able to partake in the scheme.

“I am a youth and I am delighted to serve my fatherland.

“NYSC is also a leadership development programme and since I will not remain a youth forever, I have to start preparing myself for the future,’’ he said.

He promised to take active part in all the camp activities.

NAN reports that Davido is a 2015 graduate of Music from Babcock University, Ilisan, Ogun State.

He was posted to Lagos for the mandatory one-year NYSC programme.

Egyptian Actor Amr Waked Fears Arrest Upon Return To Egypt Over Fake News

An Egyptian actor, Amr Waked, has told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, Egyptian Embassy in Madrid had unofficially informed him that military courts have convicted him of spreading fake news and insulting the state.

The 45-year-old Egyptian actor, known for his roles in “Syriana,” “Lucy,” and the Netflix Series “Marco Polo,” currently lives in Europe.  He is a well-known critic of president Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi’s government.

The two sentences amount to an eight-year prison term.

Waked also says an official embassy notice to him says his Egyptian passport could only be renewed if he personally returns to Egypt for the process.

A retired Egyptian intelligence official, Mohammed Rashad, says this is not the first time Amr waked has made public statement against the government of Egypt.  He said waked had been warned before.

TAMPAN Commends FG's Response To Baba Suwe's Treatment

A week ago, the story of Baba Suwe, Babatunde Omidina’s health challenges and admission to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, was told in many media outlets.

In it, national president of the Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Producers Association of Nigeria TAMPAN, Bolaji Amusan, also known as Mr. Latin, says the veteran actor is suffering from an undisclosed ailment.

Amusan said Health Minister, Professor Isaac Adewole had announced that the federal government will foot Omidina’s medical bills.  He thanked the minister for making arrangements for LUTH to admit and treat the ailing actor.  He also commended Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for donating a million naira toward Baba Suwe’s treatment.

Soweto Gospel Choir Celebrates Grammy Win

Multi-award winning South African Music Group, Soweto Gospel Choir, is celebrating after scooping another Grammy.  The group which started in 2002 walked away with the award for best world music album at the 61st annual Grammy awards ceremony in Los Angeles earlier this month, for their album “freedom” which was released in June last year to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday.

The choir performed with American singer Beyonce at the Global Citizen Festival in South Africa last year. It has been showered with a string of awards in its 17-year history, including the Grammy awards for the best traditional world music in 2007 and 2008.
