Forum On African Energy Interconnection Development Held In Beijing

The Forum on African Energy Interconnection Development was held on Tuesday in Beijing, as one of the activities of the 2018 Beijing Summit regarding the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

At the forum, the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) and Guinea jointly launched the African Energy Interconnection Sustainable Development Alliance to deepen China-Africa energy cooperation, accelerate energy transformation in Africa and help African countries to achieve sustainable development.

The alliance aims to build a cooperation platform for mutual cooperation, joint construction, sharing and win-win scenarios, to give full play to the role of governments, organizations, enterprises and institutions, and to make full use of the technology, equipment, market and resources of Chinese and African enterprises.

“To solve the problem of sustainable development in Africa, it is crucial to seize the key of energy, develop the resources advantages in Africa, promote resource development through clean development, promote economic transformation through energy transformation, promote regional integration through interconnection, and accelerate the construction of African energy Internet,” said Liu Zhenya, the chairman of GEIDCO.

At the forum, GEIDCO released the “African Energy Internet Planning Research” report for the first time, which proposed the overall idea of building an African energy Internet to accelerate the development of large-scale hydropower, solar energy, wind power and various distributed power sources in Africa and strengthen the backbone of each country. The construction of grids and distribution networks will promote the interconnection of transnational regions across the continent and promote the construction of interconnection channels between Africa and Europe and Asia.

“That is why the cooperation with the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization to promote the concept of energy interconnectedness in Africa and facilitate clean energy development, as part of President Xi’s initiative, it’s basically important for us. But more importantly, for the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development goals, and the Africa we want in Agenda 2063,” said Vera Songwe, the deputy secretary general of the United Nations and also executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

In addition, the project docking was carried out during the forum and a number of Chinese companies signed project cooperation agreements and strategic alliance agreements with African power companies and trade institutions.

Zimbabwe: Government, Civil Servants Agree Salary Deal

Zimbabwe government and civil servants have finally agreed to a salary accord after the government increased its offer to four hundred million dollars, up by fifty million.

This means government workers and civil servants will each receive an increment of a hundred twenty-nine dollars effective on April the first.

Negotiations for a further salary review, possibly in June, will continue with consideration of other non-monetary incentives.

Niger's Top Court Outlaws 'Fifth Wife' Sex-Slave Maids

Niger’s top court has outlawed the practice of keeping women as maids and sex slaves known as “fifth wives.”  This ends a decade-long legal battle by one victim that lawyers say could inspire others in the West African nation to seek justice.

Thomson-Reuters Foundation says a Nigerien court had initially ruled in favor of the victim’s master, but she appealed the decision.  Last month, the Niger court of appeals ruled that her first marriage was never valid and that all “fifth wife” marriages are illegal.

Gunmen Abduct Student Football Team In Cameroon

Gunmen have abducted twenty University of Buea male football team members in Cameroon’s southwest. A report says university Vice-Chancellor, Ngono Horace Manga, has confirmed the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor is quoted as saying armed men stormed the university’s football ground and ordered the players who were training for an upcoming competition to leave with them.

Manga also said the kidnappers contacted university authorities and demanded a ransom.  He did not disclose the amount for which they were asking.

No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.
