Petrol Tanker Accident Injures 4 In Yenagoa

Four persons have been critically injured in a ghastly motor accident involving a tanker laden with petrol and two commercial tricycles known as ”Keke NAPEP.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident happened on Sunday morning along Akenpai, a suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital.

The accident, according to a resident who witnessed it, occurred around 10:40 a.m. when the tanker laden with premium motor spirit, lost control and hit the tricycles at its front.

The witness who only identified herself as Ann explained that it took the intervention of people to get some heavy-duty equipment to pull out people who were trapped between the tricycles and the fuel tanker.

According to Ann, at the time of the incident, some of the victims, numbering four were seen gasping for breath and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.

She added that men of the fire service were presently on ground putting measures in place to prevent a possible fire outbreak.

When contacted on telephone, Bayelsa Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps said that he was on his way from a trip to Abuja and pledged to update on the incident as soon as he got back.

A NAN Correspondent who visited the scene reports that petrol was gushing out of the tanker but the presence of policemen discouraged people from scooping the product.

The Spokesman of the Police Command in Bayelsa, DSP Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident to NAN.

Butswat said he was aware of the incident but that he had not been informed of any loss of lives.

Butswat also said on telephone that the Fire Service personnel had been notified of the accident and that Policemen had been drafted to cordon off the area to forestall possible fire explosion following the spillage from the tanker.

Girl Child Education Beyond Getting Girls Into Schools - UNICEF

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) says girl child education goes beyond just getting girls into schools.

UNICEF chief of field office in Kaduna, Dr Zakari Adam, stated this at a two-day meeting of high-level women advocates, UNICEF’s Nigeria intervention project, currently in 14 states.

It is funded by the UK department for international development to advocate for women education and empowerment in their respective states.

Adam says it is not enough to get the girl child to school, but one must ensure that the girl is safe, and that she learns and completes all levels of education to live a quality life.

Adam explained that the meeting was organized for the women to review progress and challenges, and to draw action plans that would improve access to opportunities and quality education for girls and young people.

Onnoghen's Resignation Not Enough - SANs

A 20-man group of Senior Advocates of Nigeria under the umbrella of the justice reform project is saying former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen’s resignation was not enough because of the grave nature of the allegations” against him.

The group is urging the federal government to sanction other judges whose legitimate earnings do not justify their wealth.

The justice reform project says extending the anti-graft exercise to other judges will restore confidence in the judiciary and dampen the notion that the former Chief Justice of Nigeria was being victimized.

The group, set up to push for reforms in the judiciary/legal profession, is led by one of the oldest Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Ebun Sofunde.  Some of the members include Jibrin Okutepa, Dr Babatunde Ajibade, Prof Ernest Ojukwu, Osaro Eghobamien, Funke Adekoya, and Kayode Sofola.
