NLC, FG Dialogue On Minimum Wage Continues

The Nigeria Labour Congress, and the federal government, will meet again on Monday over the new minimum wage.  NLC says the recent plight of pensioners has not been ignored in the negotiation.

The federal government and NLC met on Friday for seven hours but did not make a headway in their discussions.

NLC spokesman said the federal government was four years behind in the remittance of pension funds to a bond which existed before the new pension scheme was instituted.

Worker Commits Suicide Over Unpaid Salary in Benue State

A worker in Makurdi local government area of Benue State has committed suicide over alleged non-payment of his salaries.

Reports say the state’s local government workers have not been paid for about eight months, and some claim the government is owing them up to a year of salaries.

A worker in the local government, who spoke in confidence, claimed the deceased worked in the agriculture department.

The source says the unnamed local government worker drank acid.

MPC Meets In Abuja To Attracts Foreign Capital

Members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet today in Abuja to take measures to attract more foreign capital inflow and curtail capital outflow and rising inflation ahead of next month’s elections.

National Bureau of Statistics says the consumer price index, which measures inflation, rose to almost eleven and a half per cent in December.

This is the 265th meeting of the MPC, and the first for the year.  It is expected to keep all policy rates unchanged as has been with all meetings since July 2016.

That decision will prevail despite rising calls from economic experts for the committee to lower benchmark interest rate.

Summonu Urges NLC Leaders To Be Sincere To Members

Hassan Sunmonu, the pioneer president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has advised leaders of various labour unions against selling out their members for pecuniary gains to avoid suffering karmic retribution.

Sunmonu gave this warning in Ibadan at the weekend.  He was guest speaker at a lecture titled, “the life and challenges of a trade union leader,” delivered in Honour Of Isiaka Ibrahim, former NLC chairman in Oyo State.

Sunmonu said trade unionists could only consider themselves successful if they truly overcame inducements and temptations from employees.

Sunmonu remarked that union leaders who help or betray their workers will get their rewards or retribution both on earth and in hell.
