Senator Abaribe Pleads To Be Relieve As Nnamdi Kanu's Surety

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has told the Court of Appeal in Abuja that his standing as surety for the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is illegal, and so, urged the court to relieve him of it.

Abaribe also asked the court to set aside the November order of the federal high court in Abuja which gave him and two others a two-month ultimatum to pay N100m bond for their inability to produce the Biafran activist.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld in November that Abaribe and two other sureties owed the court the duty of producing Kanu, whose absence since 2017 has halted his trial on charges of treasonable felony.

Relying on sections 55, 165(3), 167(3) and 488 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and other provisions of the constitution, Ume quoted sections of the law that exempt a public officer, such as a senator, from standing surety for a suspect.

He blamed the federal high court for approving a senator as one of Kanu’s sureties in 2017.

Worker Commits Suicide Over Unpaid Salary in Benue State

A worker in Makurdi local government area of Benue State has committed suicide over alleged non-payment of his salaries.

Reports say the state’s local government workers have not been paid for about eight months, and some claim the government is owing them up to a year of salaries.

A worker in the local government, who spoke in confidence, claimed the deceased worked in the agriculture department.

The source says the unnamed local government worker drank acid.

MPC Meets In Abuja To Attracts Foreign Capital

Members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will meet today in Abuja to take measures to attract more foreign capital inflow and curtail capital outflow and rising inflation ahead of next month’s elections.

National Bureau of Statistics says the consumer price index, which measures inflation, rose to almost eleven and a half per cent in December.

This is the 265th meeting of the MPC, and the first for the year.  It is expected to keep all policy rates unchanged as has been with all meetings since July 2016.

That decision will prevail despite rising calls from economic experts for the committee to lower benchmark interest rate.

Summonu Urges NLC Leaders To Be Sincere To Members

Hassan Sunmonu, the pioneer president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, has advised leaders of various labour unions against selling out their members for pecuniary gains to avoid suffering karmic retribution.

Sunmonu gave this warning in Ibadan at the weekend.  He was guest speaker at a lecture titled, “the life and challenges of a trade union leader,” delivered in Honour Of Isiaka Ibrahim, former NLC chairman in Oyo State.

Sunmonu said trade unionists could only consider themselves successful if they truly overcame inducements and temptations from employees.
