Gabon Government Closes Schools After Grant Protests
Gabon authorities have announced on Thursday a nationwide suspension of classes following high school students protest over plans to cut university grants.
Education Minister, Michel M’essonne said in a statement the decision is to calm the situation and listen to the public.
In late march, a draft decree reduced access to state grants for aspiring university students, setting age limits for access to funds, and requiring applicants to reach at least 12 points out of a maximum of 20 mark in the school certificate examination.
Organizations representing high school students called on pupils to demonstrate peacefully on Monday, as the new term began, and to stay on the streets on subsequent days.
Thousands of youngsters demonstrated in a number of towns, including hundreds in their school uniforms.
Government Suspends Headmistress Of Girl Sent Home From School In Viral Video
One can only wonder how a little primary school girl would feel when sent home for not paying examination levy. Would little Success Adegor even know what “examination levy” means?
Well, that is exactly what a headmistress did in a primary school in Sapele, Delta State.
The story went viral on social media, and now, the headmistress, Vero Igbigwe of Okotie-Eboh Primary School One, has been suspended.
Commissioner for Education, Barriter Chidu Ebie visited the school and interviewed the headmistress whom he said couldn’t connect in her answers, especially since primary and secondary school education in the state is totally free. The commissioner said the head teacher had no right to impose any levy.
One good thing came out of the commissioner’s visit to the school though. Seeing the dilapidated state of the school’s infrastructure, the state government has decided to carry out a phased renovation and upgrade of the facilities beginning with Okotie-Eboh primary school.
