Rivers Election: Nigerian Army, INEC Disunited Over Allegations Of Invasion
The Six Division of the Nigeria Army is taking issue with allegations of invasion of the Obio-Akpor collation center by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, which it claims was ignored by the fact-finding committee of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The army says it is disappointed in the statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and chairman Information and Voter Education Commtitee, Festus Okoye, that nothing in its report presented to the fact-finding committee reflected that fact.
The Army said INEC failed to report that police officers from government house, in collusion with thugs, went in fifty vehicles to Obio-Akpor collation center and allegedly shot captain Adams Salami at close range. The same group was said to have allegedly matcheted corporal Adeosun Adebayo. The army says both men are still in the hospital.
The Army expressed disappointment and asked that the Nigeria police leadership commence full-scale investigation of those security aides it says attacked troops at the collation center.
The Army has threatened to withdraw its partnership with the police.
Building Housing At Least 80 Police Families Identified For Demolition In Lagos
Even the police community has not escaped incidents of building collapse. More than eighty Nigerian police families are scheduled to lose their housing to demolition at the Ikeja highway police barracks. Police say they are on the chopping block as a result of structural defects.
This might not have become so urgent if not for a building in the barracks that collapsed and killed two persons.
In another incident in the same barracks during the time of police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, News Agency of Nigeria reports that a sergeant and a civilian lost their lives on Christmas day when a part of the bathroom in their unit in the barracks collapsed while they had their bath.
Owoseni ordered a demolition of the building at that time.
Maigari Dikko, Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of works says some of the occupants in the barracks had been instructed to vacate the defective buildings for a long time, but they are still there.
He said the force is looking at ways to rehabilitate all defective buildings in all barracks across the country to avoid a repeat of the collapsed barracks building.
INEC To Decide On Okorocha’s Senatorial Election Outcome Soon
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will decide on the next steps to take on the controversies surrounding Imo West Senatorial District in which 37 candidates, including governor Rochas Okorocha, contested.
INEC’s chief press secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, says the commission has not yet issued a certificate of return to any candidate from that district.
INEC returning officer, Professor Ibeawuchi Innocent had claimed he declared Okorocha as winner under duress. The commission says no result declared by any of its officials under duress would be accepted.
